SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE DIRECTOR: Massachusetts Advocates for Children (MAC)

Massachusetts Advocates for Children (MAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to being an independent and effective voice for children who face significant barriers to equal educational and life opportunities. For nearly 40 years, MAC has responded to the needs of children who are vulnerable because of disability, poverty, race/ethnicity, or limited English. With an annual budget of $1.2 million, MAC currently has major projects related to school reform in Boston, the impact of trauma on learning and behavior, and special education for children with autism, children in Somerville and students transitioning from high school. Position Overview: MAC is seeking a Special Assistant to the Director who will participate in communication and fundraising activities and manage the organization’s databases and websites. Duties and responsibilities will include:
· Participate in on-going newsletter writing/publication and help develop regular e-newsletter capacity; · Serve as webmaster for MAC website and assist with management of the site currently under development for the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative; · Participate in planning and executing MAC’s annual holiday appeal; · Identify foundation grant opportunities and participate in grant writing, as needed; · Assist in planning and implementing MAC’s 40th anniversary events in 2009; · Manage database systems to engage and track donors and program constituents; · Assist with other fundraising events and activities for MAC and for the Autism Center; · Help develop marketing material, as needed. Qualifications · Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. · A personal belief in the mission, goals, and objectives of the organization. · Proficiency with development and other list software. · Proficiency with Internet and email technology. · Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while maintaining focus and attention to detail. · Ability to work independently as well as within a team setting. · Strong customer service orientation. DEVELOPMENT EVENTS & TRAINING COORDINATOR: National Consumer Law Center (NCLC)

Founded in 1969, NCLC is a nonprofit advocacy organization that challenges predatory and destructive business practices that drain income and wealth from low-income families and their communities. NCLC is the leading source of legal and public policy expertise on consumer issues for lawyers, federal and state policymakers, consumer advocates, journalists, and social services providers. We are seeking a dynamic, highly organized person who is interested in working for our growing nonprofit organization.

Responsibilities · Help plan and organize all aspects of large annual conference · Promote, plan, and organize training workshops and conferences · Help plan and organize special events · Coordinate production of printed event materials (including Save-the-Dates, invitations, training materials, and conference brochures) · Help expand interest in NCLC’s publications for lawyers, advocates, and consumers · Negotiate contracts for special events and meeting space · Help with additional fundraising activities, as needed · Some travel required
Qualifications · A bachelor’s degree · At least two years of relevant work experience · Experience organizing special events and conferences · Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills · Highly-organized; superb attention to detail - Demonstrated ability to plan and manage events and other projects.
- Ability to juggle multiple assignments on deadlines and prioritize accordingly
- Ability to work calmly under pressure; good common sense and ability to make sound judgments
- Proficiency in Microsoft Access, Word, and Excel; experience with graphics program a plus.
SALARY: $38,000. Excellent benefits, including family health and dental insurance, long- and short-term disability, and life insurance as well as generous vacation, sick, and personal leave time.

Western Massachusetts Legal Services Inc. (WMLS) has a staff attorney position available in our Hampshire & Franklin County offices located in Northampton, MA. The major responsibilities of this position are expected to be in housing and employment law. The successful candidate may also work in the areas of benefits, family, elder or other substantive areas of law as needed.
WMLS is a private, non-profit organization with a long tradition of providing quality civil legal assistance to individuals, as well as aggressive advocacy in all forums to address legal challenges facing poor people in our community. WMLS is principally supported by state and IOLTA funds and does not receive support from the Legal Services Corporation. Therefore we can represent low income people using all available legal strategies.
